Parshas Vayechi 2 – ויחי

At the end of his life Yaakov blesses his children. When Yosef brings his sons to be blessed Yaakov crosses his hands so that the older son was on the left and the younger on the right as the younger one would end up being greater than the older.

We made crossed hands

1. Almond dough:
1/2 c margarine melted
4 c powdered sugar
2 TBSP soymilk
2 drops almond extract
Beat all ingredients together until it reaches a workable consistency (it should be almost like play dough – add more powdered sugar to make it thicker).

2. Shape the almond dough into hands and stick a skewer in. Leave a few hours to harden.

3. Melt peach cholate and dip “hands” in.

Parshas Vayeishev – וישב

Parshas Vayeishev discusses how the shevatim saw that Yosef was the favorite of Yaacov and were jealous of him because of it. They hated him even more when he told them of the two dreams he had which indicated that he would rule over them. Later when Yosef goes to look for this brothers who were out in the dessert, they throw him into a pit hoping he would die. They later remove him and sell him to Arabs heading to Mitzrayim.

We made Yosef in the “pit”.

Orange Loaf Cake
3 3/4 c flour
2 1/2 c sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
2 sticks margarine
1 tsp salt
1 c orange juice
2 Tbsp orange rind
4 eggs
We used a mini bundt cake pan to make these small pits, you can use a regular bundt cake pan to make it in large.
Bake at 350 for about an hour (depends on what size you make)

We used powdered sugar mixed with orange juice for the drizzle and a mini-chocolate bear for Yosef.

Parshas Vayeitzei – ויצא

In Parshas Vayeitzei Yaakov travels to Charon in search of a wife. On the way he lays down to rest on the ground and he places stones around his head to protect himself against wild animals, and uses one to rest his head on. The stones argued with each other as they each want to be the one under the tzadik\’s head. Hashem made a miracle and joined them together making them one stone.

We made cinnamon buns that started separate, but joined together into one large cinnamon bun once baked.

Parshas Toldos – תולדות

In this weeks parsha Esav and Yaakov are born. Esav comes home one day exhausted and sells his bechorah to Yaakov for a pot of red lentil soup.

We made chocolate bowls with “red lentils”

We used small balloons dipped into melted backing chocolate to create the bowls. After dipping half of each balloon into the melted chocolate we let them rest on a sheet of wax paper till they hardened, then re-dipped them to make them firmer.
