At the end of his life Yaakov blesses his children. When Yosef brings his sons to be blessed Yaakov crosses his hands so that the older son was on the left and the younger on the right as the younger one would end up being greater than the older.
We made crossed hands
1. Almond dough:
1/2 c margarine melted
4 c powdered sugar
2 TBSP soymilk
2 drops almond extract
Beat all ingredients together until it reaches a workable consistency (it should be almost like play dough – add more powdered sugar to make it thicker).
2. Shape the almond dough into hands and stick a skewer in. Leave a few hours to harden.
3. Melt peach cholate and dip “hands” in.
In Parshas Vayigash Yosef sends his brothers back to Eretz Yisroel with food, silver, and clothing. He asks them to tell Yaakov that he is still alive and to bring Yaakov down to see him.
We put candy fruit (for food) and silver chocolates (for the silver) in bowels to represent this.
In Parshas Mikeitz Yosef\’s brothers return to Mitzrayim to buy food. When they leave Yosef places his cup in Binyomins bag so he would be framed for stealing it.
We made red sorbet and put it in a cone “cup”.
Parshas Vayeishev discusses how the shevatim saw that Yosef was the favorite of Yaacov and were jealous of him because of it. They hated him even more when he told them of the two dreams he had which indicated that he would rule over them. Later when Yosef goes to look for this brothers who were out in the dessert, they throw him into a pit hoping he would die. They later remove him and sell him to Arabs heading to Mitzrayim.
We made Yosef in the “pit”.
Orange Loaf Cake
3 3/4 c flour
2 1/2 c sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
2 sticks margarine
1 tsp salt
1 c orange juice
2 Tbsp orange rind
We used a mini bundt cake pan to make these small pits, you can use a regular bundt cake pan to make it in large.
Bake at 350 for about an hour (depends on what size you make)
We used powdered sugar mixed with orange juice for the drizzle and a mini-chocolate bear for Yosef.
In Parshas Vayishlach Yaakov returns to the land of Canaan and sends gifts to Esav to appease him in case he was still angry that Yaakov had stolen the brachos.
Cake (make 2 separate batches)
6 eggs separated
1/3 c sugar
2 Tbsp oil
5 Tbsp flour
2 Tbsp Cocoa
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
Beat egg whites until stiff then slowly add sugar, mix rest of ingredients separately and slowly add. Bake at 350 for 15 min.
1 lb powdered sugar
1 stick margarine
2 Tbsp orange juice
2 Tbsp corn syrup
2 tsp vanilla extract
Bake each batch of cake separately, then starting with the cake, layer the cream and then the second cake. Cut into squares and pour melted chocolate over them to cover. Use white icing and decoration to make the “ribbons”.
