Parshas Vezos Haberachah – וזאת הברכה

Vezos Haberachah is the last parsha of the Torah. It contains Moshe\’s final good bye and how he dies. In it is one of the most famous verses – תורה צוה לנו משה מורשה קהילת יעקב – The Torah that Moshe commanded us is our inheritance.

We made Sifrei Torah out of candy, you can use almost any kind of candy to create these so be creative!

וזאת הברכה לג:ד
Vezos Haberachah 33:4

This can also be used for Simchas Torah – שמחת תורה

Yom Kippur – Seudah Ha-Mafsekes – יום כיפור

On Erev Yom Kipper we eat food that is shaped into pockets so the contents are “hidden”. This symbolizes that the day of Erev Yom Kipper is a holiday, but since we do not have the regular laws of a holiday (ie. no working) it is a “hidden” holiday. It also represents how we want Hashem to judge us, the filling is the heart, the dough represents the logical thoughts, we want Him to allow the emotions of the heart to come through.
We made blueberry turnovers for this minhag.

We used ready made pastry dough squares with blueberry pie filling to make this dessert really quickly. We also drizzled some powdered sugar and water over them for an extra sweet year 🙂

Rosh Hashanah 2 – ראש השנה

On Rosh Hashanah we eat sweet things like honey to have a sweet year.

Honey/Chocolate Marble Cake

Honey batter:
1 3/4 c flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 c oil
1/2 c honey
3/4 c sugar
1/4 c brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 c coffee (1 tsp dissolved in 1/2 c hot water)
1/4 c orange juice

Chocolate batter:
1 1/2 c flour
1/3 c cocoa
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 c oil
1 c sugar
1/2 c brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 c flat cola

Mix each batter separately, then pour honey batter first into pan, then chocolate on top of it. No need to mix, it mixes itself.
Bake at 350 for 1 hour.

Rosh Hashanah – ראש השנה

On Rosh Hashanah we eat an apple dipped in honey.

1 – We made cupcakes out of our basic white cake recipe (an cupcake will work). We specifically used red cupcake holders to give it more of an apple look.
White Cake
1/2 c oil
1 1/2 c sugar
2 eggs
2 1/4 c flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 c orange juice
1/2 c water
1 tsp vanilla extract
Beat sugar and oil, then add eggs. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt.
Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.

2 – Ice cupcakes (we used powdered sugar and water) and cover with red sugar crystals.
3 – Place a small pretzel as the stem and green taffy as the leaf.

Shavuos 2 – שבועות

Here are a few other desserts we made over shavous. Notice how all of them are different ice-creams as some of the company we are having (not to mention some of my family members) do not count cake or cookies as dessert :).

1 c sugar
1 Tbps lemon juice

8 oz whipped cream (whipped)
Beat strawberries, sugar, egg whites, lemon juice and salt until stiff (about 10 min)
Fold whip into strawberry mixture and pour into crust. Freeze

1/2 c sugar
8 oz whip cream
1/2 Tbsp vanilla sugar
1/2 c pancake syrup
1/2 c peanut brittle
caramel sauce

Chocolate Ice-Cream pie
8 oz whip cream
3 oz chocolate spread
2 eggs
1/4 c sugar

1 stick margarine
Mix all together and then place on greased cookie sheet. Bake on 350 for 15 min.
Fruit Bowl
For those who want something a bit more healthy…

Shavuos – שבועות

On Shavous many people have a minhag (tradition) to eat dairy products as a reminder that when Bnei Yisroel accepted the Torah they were first told how to prepare meat products. Since it would take a significant amount of time to prepare meat products from scratch, they sufficed with dairy products.

Purim – Hanging Hamans

It has long been a tradition in our home to “hang” Haman and his ten sons starting on Rosh Chodesh Adar and giving them out to children who come by on Purim day. It it a great way to start the excitement of Purim a few weeks early.
