Parshas Emor – אמור

Parshas Emor discusses many of the holidays we celebrate throughout the year. The karbon omer, a handful of barley flour was brought on the second day of Chag Hamatzos (commonly known as Peseach). We are then commanded to count 7 weeks – 49 days. The 50th day is the holiday of Shavuos, the day we were told the 10 commandments, and given the Torah. On that day we are commanded to bring 2 loaves of bread from the new crop accompanied by a special selection of korbanos in addition to the korbanos of the holiday of Shavuos.

We made a calendar counting from Pesach until Shavuos.

Emor 23:15
1- We made a batch of peanut chews

Peanut Chews
2 cups peanut butter
1 cup honey
1/2 lb dark baking chocolate
1 Tbsp water
4 cups Rice Krispies
2 cups chopped peanuts
10 oz white chocolate chips
Melt one cup of peanut butter with the water, honey and dark chocolate. Once completely melted add the Rice Krispies and chopped peanuts. Mix together well and spread evenly accross a flat cookie sheet. Once cooled, melt white chocolate chips and remaining cup of peanut better and spread across the top.
2- Once partially cooled we used a toothpick to draw the lines of the calendar.
3- We melted chocolate and placed it in a small bag. We pricked a small hole at the bottom of the bag and piped the chocolate along the toothpick-marked lines. We also crossed off the days that have already been counted (up until Shabbos).
4- We then used white and red sprinkles to make candles on the Shabbos days.
5- Finally, we took a large gumdrop and 2 Mike & Ike jellybeans and using toothpicks fixed them to the Shavous day on the calendar. We also placed 3 chocolate mint rounds for matzos on the Peasach days.
