Based on the words of Chazal, we use a Blech, a covering on the fire, as a protection against altering the fire on Shabbos. The new closed burners, which are a great help in keeping the under part of the stovetop clean, allow less air to approach the fire. The whole week the fire functions correctly, but on Shabbos, when a Blech is applied, the lack of air is exacerbated and the flame goes out. Sometimes even a minor wind can extinguish the fire under the Blech, causing Halachic problems (and cold Cholent). Drilling some holes in the Blech, is a simple yet practical way to alleviate the air circulation problem for this type of stove top. |
